Ladies First

A male chauvinist is transported to a matriarchal society, facing challenges from a formidable female version of himself.
maryville says:
Thea Sharrock's *Ladies First* certainly commits to its high-concept premise, though the journey itself is a bumpy one. At a brisk 90 minutes, the film never overstays its welcome, a blessing given its often-stumbling narrative. Sacha Baron Cohen, Rosamund Pike, and Tom Davis deliver performances that are, at best, serviceable, their chemistry only occasionally sparking. Pike, in particular, tries to elevate the material, but even her formidable presence can't quite rescue the film from its own ambitions. The core idea of a chauvinist confronting his equal in a matriarchy offers fertile ground for comedy, yet the execution frequently misses the mark. Despite the talented cast, the characters often feel underdeveloped, preventing a deeper connection with their plight. Ultimately, *Ladies First* struggles to maintain its comedic momentum, leaving much to be desired in the entertainment department. It’s a film that promises much but delivers disappointingly little, a missed opportunity for a truly sharp satire.
