Hokum

A horror writer visits an Irish inn to scatter his parents' ashes, unaware the property is said to be haunted by a witch.
Morgana says:
Damian McCarthy’s *Hokum*, clocking in at 107 minutes, is a frustratingly uneven experience. The premise, while intriguing, never fully capitalizes on its potential, leaving the plot feeling merely adequate. Yet, the film thrives on its character work, a definite high point. Adam Scott, Peter Coonan, and David Wilmot share a compelling chemistry, elevating every scene they inhabit. Their performances are genuinely strong, anchoring the film even when other elements falter. Unfortunately, *Hokum* struggles significantly with its entertainment value. The pacing often drags, and the scares, when they arrive, are largely ineffective. This thriller-horror hybrid, despite its talented cast and McCarthy’s distinctive touch, ultimately fails to captivate. It’s a shame, as the strong character dynamics deserved a more engaging narrative. *Hokum* is a testament to how good acting can’t always salvage a sluggish viewing experience.
